How to use EMI

Welcome to the world of modded Minecraft! With so many new items, blocks, and machines, it can be overwhelming to figure out how everything works. That’s where EMI comes in.

Think of EMI as your in-game encyclopedia and cookbook, all in one. It’s a mod that lets you see every item available in the game, look up how to craft them, and see what they’re used for, right from your inventory screen.

When you open your inventory, you’ll see the main EMI interface: a big list of items on the right side of the screen. This is your window into everything the modpack has to offer.

At its core, EMI is designed to answer three simple questions:

  1. “What is this item?” - The item list shows you every block, tool, and component from all your installed mods.
  2. “How do I make this?” - You can instantly look up the crafting recipe for any item.
  3. “What can I do with this?” - You can also see all the recipes that an item is used in.

This allows you to explore new mods and learn complex crafting chains without ever having to leave the game to check a wiki.

The most common thing you’ll do with EMI is look up recipes and usages. This is done by hovering over an item (either in your inventory or in the EMI item list) and using a hotkey.

To see how to craft an item, hover over it and press the Recipe key (usually R). This will open up a new screen showing you all the ways to make that item, whether it’s in a Crafting Table, a Furnace, or a complex machine from a mod.

Sometimes, a recipe has ingredients that also need to be crafted. EMI makes this easy to manage with its Recipe Tree feature.

When viewing a recipe, you can click the + button next to an ingredient to see its recipe in the same window. You can keep doing this for every component, creating a tree that shows you the entire crafting process from raw materials to the final product. This is incredibly powerful for planning out complex projects.
